Clarendon Homes started back in 1978 in Sydney by Peter Campbell and then moved in Queensland in 1996, making them one of the largest and most highly celebrated home builders. We spoke to Glenn Kennedy, Marketing Manager, about what makes their homes unique.

Q. Tell us a little bit about the Clarendon story.

Peter Campbell started the business about 40 years ago and, in an industry that is constantly changing, has managed to create one of Australia’s largest home builders. Peter is still as passionate about the business as when he first started and is still the CEO to this day. We expanded into Queensland 23 years ago and have been providing a unique service to the South East region since then. 

Lots of open space and entertaining areas

Q. With so many options for buyers and selections, what are the things buyers are looking for and what do you offer to differentiate between other builders?

The Queensland market is still dominated by customers wanting lots of accommodation so our real focus is creating quality dwellings with five plus bedrooms and multiple living areas. The challenge is delivering this while accommodating for the rapidly changing regulations that determine set backs and total building footprints. Our mantra is ’big homes, small prices’ and that has been really resonating with our customers.

Q. Are sustainable solutions an important part of your offering and are you seeing more people interested in finding ways to incorporate smarter energy solutions?

In Queensland there are now mandatory requirements for six star energy efficient homes, which is really positive. We’ve been able to use these regulations to maximise the livability of our homes through clever design solutions. That is through the use of materials that work in these climates as well as layouts that allow for airflow and to maximise cooling, which we would need to do anyway to suit South East Queensland climate conditions regardless of building regulations.  

Q. What are the materials and types of homes that clients are increasingly asking for?

In a nod to the Queensland design heritage, our customers are really focussed on the Hamptons style; lightweight cladding, lots of timber and getting an updated look to the iconic ‘Queenslander’. We’re really proud to be part of repopulating the suburbs with this look, as it keeps a connection to an important part of the historical streetscape.

Q. Home builders obviously have their own in-house design team. How often do you release new designs and what are the big changes you are implementing in terms of design solutions over the next two years?

The changing lot typography is the standout to me, changing lot size but still wanting that big Queensland living style. We’re also seeing a changing demographic that is looking towards multi-generational options by creating a home within a home, allowing for a self-sufficient living within the family home, a different way of looking at the external granny flat. With so much ageing stock in inner Brisbane we are seeing a real pick up in the knock-down and rebuild option. We offer a full project management service for these projects, which just takes the headache away for many people.

Modern design features are standard

Q. What is the typical construction period from contract signing to lock up?

Twenty-five weeks for a big, two storey home. 

Q. Are new home owners more aware of quality fixtures, fittings and appliances and requesting that more in the home, as they look to create longevity in their homes?

Yes absolutely. About half of our customers choose to upgrade their fixtures and fittings with things like better stone bench tops, pivot front doors and European appliances. The money they save on our construction they use to invest in our range of upgrades which makes sense as they are building a home they intend to inhabit for many years to come. There is a growing appreciation for quality and that, in the long run, this will be a time and money saver.
